Sick Time and Catch-Up

OK, so posting has been very, very light lately.  You’ll have to excuse me – I’ve been sick.  It peaked last night around 8:00pm and I’ve been on the downhill side since.  I’ve been catching up on homework so posting will continue to be light until that is caught up.

Absence and Catching Up

And I’m back, for now. I want to apologize for my absence and inform everyone as to why I’ve been gone. In March I began working at a Mortgage Brokerage corporation in Salt Lake City. I was hired as a licensing coordinator and have been trying to get up to speed on their licensing and compliance needs.

You see, the company, which shall remain anonymous and simply called Company A, is about three years behind in getting a workflow management system and infrastructure in place to track all of the onboarding and licensing for their new hiring of loan originators and branch managers. I’m sure that sounds like a garbled mess, but hey, so are their licensing files!

So I’ve been working overtime (nice paycheck) and it hasn’t been too bad. It’s basically put me back on the schedule that I was used too during the last semester.

Speaking of a school, only one week of freedom left then eight weeks of punishment and I have my A.A.!

Back to work – so work and overtime should only last for another month or so and then things should calm down. The experience has been an interesting one. I’ve stepped into an industry that I know nothing about, and I’m glad to say that I’m keeping my head above water. But then again, it’s not rocket science, it’s simply following directions.

Regulatory and Compliance is simply following directions. The trick is trying to adjust quickly enough when the rules change. Take Company A for example. We are a Billion Dollar corporation licensed to do business in 47 states. Yep, and we’re handling all of our hiring and tracking on spreadsheets. I’m glad that the executive management has decided to fork out a little bit of money so that we can reach our goal of being a 10 Billion dollar corporation.

My frustration has been, why wasn’t this done earlier? On the bright side, if it was done earlier I might not have a job trying to get us there so count your blessings. But when the big wigs keep complaining about fines, we keep asking for a system that will help us avoid fines. Some of that “you have to spend money to make money” philosophy that I hear is taught in Business School. But, what do I know, I’m just an entry level lacky who is pursuing (not in possession of) a degree. Some day I’ll show you little people!

Subject change – I had a really, really good Memorial Day weekend. Now, the weather on Monday left quite a bit to be desired, but I got to spend so much time with my family! I need a three day weekend every weekend. Saturday and Sunday are always so busy that there is no time to rest (even though the Sabbath is supposed to be a day of rest) and having that extra day was great. And to make it better, my wife enjoyed my company. Yep, not once did I hear, “I wish you were at work” or something to that effect.

I want to thank all of our Veterans, past, present and future, for the service that they have given to Freedom and to the United States. Both of my grandfathers served in the United States Military. My Grandpa Cooper was in the Navy. He was Quartermaster on the USS Little and watched as the flag was raised at Iwo Jima. Well, he almost saw it. He was watching through his field glasses from the USS Little and someone asked him a question. He turned to answer then and when he resumed watching, the flag had been raised. The USS Little was sunk by Kamikazes on May 3, 1945 and received two battle stars for its service in WWII. Grandpa survived, came home, and had 9 kids.

My Grandpa Hansen served in the Marnie Corps during the Korean War. After injuring his back during a night exercise, Grandpa was assigned to the Marine Corp Recruitment Band. A skilled, self taught musician, Grandpa served his time and came home, with his wife and son in tow and raised two children. He had two brothers that served in the Army in WWII, and his father, Robert Leslie Hansen, served in the Army in WWI, fighting in the Argon Forrest in France. Having survived being mustard gassed, he returned home, married, and raised five children.

I cannot express in words the feelings of gratitude that I have for their service. I am here because they bravely did their duty. That is a legacy that I get to pass on to my son. Thank you.

Fall at the U

A few days ago, I wrote about being jerked around by the University of Utah’s University College. Well, the next Monday I went and met with a student adviser to see what all the hubbub was about. It turns out that, since I had only met with with my departmental adviser, that did not count as my meeting with “an adviser” to be able to register. After spending about 15 minutes with the correct person, and being way ahead of them the entire time, the hold was removed from my records and I was able to register for classes.

Funny thing, after I registered I realized that I will have the same professor for all three classes Fall semester. That is either going to be really good or really bad. But I’ll cross that road when I get there. The good news is that I have two classes left, then I’ll have my A.A. and I’ll be just that much closer to getting my B.A.!

I’d like to apologize to my loyal readers, and to anybody else who has stumbled upon this site and found it enjoyable. The whole family has been sick: the boy had it last week, the wife got it Thursday night, and it finally got me Sunday night. The fluid release has stopped, now I just ache like crazy! No worries, we’ll soon be back at it.

Lapse Notice

I’d like to apologize to you, my readers, for my recent lapse in posting. I’ve been getting ready for finals, and both my sweet wife and little Deuce have come down with a cold.

Coming soon: My list of things that must go (an idea spawned by Radio From Hell, with Kerry, Bill, & Gina). Also, other things of interest.

Long Time No Post

So, I haven’t posted in a while but there’s been a lot going on. School, work, the deer hunt, my 17yr old brother being a jack ass; they’re all starting to take their tole. But that is no excuse, the blog must continue! So I’m back. This apology is over.
