Happy Birthday to Me!

Okay, so it’s not my birthday – yet.  Friday, April 8th is.  I am turning 30 and this birthday is quite different than any that I’ve had previously.  When I was younger, even just 10 years ago, I’d imagined that I’d be so much “further along in life” than I am right now.  Initially I felt frustrated with my perceived lack of progress in life.  But then I decided to take stock of my accomplishments and blessings and life is actually treating me pretty well.  Here is a short and incomplete list:

  • I’m married to the most wonderful woman in the world and we recently celebrated our fifth wedding anniversary.
  • I have two beautiful and smart children.  Two boys that I love more than I can describe.
  • I received my undergraduate degree from the University of Utah in December 2009 and am very close to being accepted into a graduate program at Gonzaga University.
  • I live comfortably.  Our bills are paid, there is food on the table and clothes on our backs.  We have enough for simple comforts and even a little to put into savings.
  • I live in the greatest country that has ever been created on the face of this planet.
  • I belong to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.  I know who I am.  I know God’s plan.  I’ll follow Him in faith.

But now on to the big news – my birthday present!

Last year I broke the pinky finger on my right hand, as described here, which led to me purchasing a Ruger LCP for carry until my finger healed.  No longer having a need for Elsie Pea, other than for discreet carry when the XD is just too big, I decided to sell her off and search for something better.

Ah yes, “better.”  That’s a tricky word for gunnies.  What does “better” mean?  Well, that depends on who you ask.  For me, better meant a Sig Sauer P238.

P238-N-detail-L

Introduced at the SHOT Show in 2009, the P238 is Sig’s remake of the Colt Mustang.  Chambered in .380 ACP and holding six in the magazine plus one in the chamber, the P238 packs plenty of firepower for a pocket pistol.  It’s the perfect compromise of size, firepower and discreet concealed carry, I feel.

I hope to get out and shoot her this weekend and with a snow storm blowing in I’ll most likely be forced into an indoor range (I prefer outdoor).

I have to give a super big THANK YOU to my sweet love for giving me the green light on my birthday present.  So far, my 30th birthday has been the one causing the most stress.  I mean, I’ve never been this old!  Now I have the perfect gift to memorialize it.

Teaching the Boy

One of D’s favorite songs is the Happy Birthday song.  When a member of the family has a birthday he’ll walk around the house singing happy birthday to them until the next birthday arrives, then he switches to that next person.  Tammy and I have been trying to teach D about the meaning of the 4th of July and it must have clicked because today the song changed.

Happy Birthday to you.  Happy Birthday to you.  Happy Birthday dear America!   Happy Birthday to you.

Hopefully the Founders are smiling as much as I am.

This Weekend Officially Sucks!!!

So my three day weekend (Th, F, S) was going to be great.  I’d worked 10 of the last 11 days and things had been a little crazy when I left work so I was looking forward to some R&R.  Well, Thursday night at about 8:30 D decides to puke all over the kitchen floor.  Puking 3 more times and having two really nasty diapers before 4am meant that he was a pretty sick puppy.  Friday he seemed to ease up a little, no puking, no nasty diapers.  However, I wasn’t feeling well and was spending lots of time in the bathroom.

That brings us to today.  D wakes up and seems fine. I’m feeling better, though not 100% (stomach is still a little off) and Tammy is starting to feel sick.  We were supposed to have a family birthday party for D at 4 o’clock but we’ve decided to cancel it.

Tomorrow is Mother’s Day and I will have the honor of taking care of my sick wife until I have to go to work at 2pm.  Awesome!  This weekend officially sucks!!!

Monkey Knuts

For my birthday I decided to order myself a key chain from Monkey Knuts.  Via their website:

Monkey Knuts™ are designed as accessible keychains and zipper grips allowing keys and the like, to be gripped more conveniently than if just connected directly to a key ring.  True artisan craftsmanship – tough, non-rotting nylon parachute cord – encompassing a rustproof stainless steel ball bearing – Monkey Knuts™ ensures your keys will remain attached to you at all times.  Accidental loss is highly unlikely, saves you on wear and tear of your clothing pockets, purses and backpacks and most importantly assures you are prepared for the unexpected.

Originally used as the weight attached to a heaving line, Monkey Knuts™ or a “monkey fist” is so called because some would say it looks similar to a small primate’s clenched fist.  This authentic sailor’s knot was specifically originated to be wrapped around a heavy object, such as a cannon ball, acting as a heaving line to accurately throw a rope from ship to dock.  Although this unique tool was predominantly used for a specific nautical function, sailors frequently used this extraordinary knot as a combat weapon in the midst of battle during the 1800s.

I purchased a Knut Buster.  So far, it’s a handy little gadget.  I’ll give you a follow up later.

60 Days and Counting

I delivered my CWP application to the Utah BCI today. They said it will take 60 days. I’ll be waiting (im)patiently…
